Opportunity Snapshot

If like us, you understand the crucial role that sourcing plays in an organization's overall success, then this role is your ideal opportunity to showcase your expertise at an innovative leader within the plumbing & irrigation industries that has a 70-year legacy of manufacturing high quality products.

In this high impact role you will manage the ongoing relationships with our largest strategic suppliers in Asia with a focus on driving continuous improvement initiatives. More than simply purchasing commodities, you'll be responsible for negotiating the most favorable price, factoring in quality, delivery, quantities, and service level to assure both short- and long-term advantages for the company. You will also collaborate with cross-functional groups to support the introduction of new products.

The new Champion-Arrowhead is the fusion of two well recognized brands -- Champion Irrigation and Arrowhead Brass -- in the irrigation and plumbing industries. Under the new name, we are committed to continue with this legacy and profitably growing the company. In 2007, we received the most innovative product award by the Irrigation Association for our integral vacuum breaker line of hose bibs and wall hydrants.

What Else You'll Bring to the Table

  • A Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education & experience.
  • Minimum 5+ years of purchasing experience within the plumbing and/or irrigation industries with commodities such as screw machine parts, castings & labels.
  • Considerable knowledge of sources of supply, markets, price, and commodity trends with the ability to accurately predict/anticipate marketplace events and develop action plans that anticipate implementation challenges.
  • Experience with Asia based suppliers & ability to source complete products from low cost regions.
  • A demonstrated ability to provide leadership through influence, and facilitate dynamic, cross-functional teams.
  • Strong strategic supplier management skills.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, including strong presentation skills.
  • Solid organizational skills, including a proven ability to follow through on projects to completion.
  • A strong sense of integrity and the ability to exercise judgment, tact, and discretion.
  • Computer savvy with Intermediate proficiency in MS Office suite, including Excel.
  • A team player attitude.
Preferred, but not required:
  • Working knowledge of MRP Systems, particularly Great Plains is a plus.
  • Bilingual in English & Mandarin.

What's in It for You

  • Impact -- you'll have the opportunity to visibly contribute to our company's overall success by securing optimal supply pricing and establishing long-term vendor and customer relationships.
  • Broad visibility -- you will gain unique insight into our business as you regularly interact with many departments within our organization as well as vendors.
  • Personal autonomy -- we have clearly defined inventory and purchasing goals, but as long as you are achieving your targets, we'll empower you with the freedom and flexibility to achieve your objectives independently.
  • Great environment -- you'll become a part of a high energy and supportive team environment in an organization that places a very strong focus on its people.
  • Career development -- we reward highly motivated individuals who simultaneously develop their skills and utilize them to perform well on the job, and your success in this role could set you up for a number of advancement opportunities.

More About Your Role

If you're a good fit for this position, you already know most of what this job entails. However, to be sure we're providing a complete picture, here are some details.

Reporting to our Director of Operations, you'll join us at our LA office. As you come on board, your initial challenge will be to quickly scale the learning curve, gaining a deep understanding of the "nuts and bolts" of our products and systems and then developing and implementing sourcing strategies that meet our specific needs. During the first year, youll focus on achieving the following goals:
  • Reducing COGS.
  • Meeting and exceeding our inventory & service goals.
  • Ensuring timely introduction of new products.
  • In a nutshell, you will spend about 60% of your time with day-to-day sourcing & purchasing activities including researching and putting together quote packages; another 20% with strategic planning initiatives; and the remaining 20% with collaboration projects including meetings. More specifically, your activities will include (this list is not exhaustive, but intended to give you a sense of the role):
  • Managing existing supplier relationships and strategic supplier accounts.
  • Developing suppliers into strategic partners who bring value and innovation to the supply chain.
  • Collaborating on the development and implementation of strategic sourcing strategies.
  • Performing competitive bidding, make vs. buy analysis, and negotiating contract terms.
  • Negotiating year over year productivity and sourced product agreements with suppliers.
  • Selecting and developing new suppliers as required.
You can expect to travel to Asia a couple of times a year, depending on need.

Keys to Success

While your success in this role will stem from your ability to negotiate and obtain the best pricing while managing price increases, it will also very much depend on your ability to develop and sustain strong trust-based partnerships with a wide range of personalities and internal customers by demonstrating unyielding integrity, professionalism, and a willingness to jump in and assist as needed. It will be essential, therefore, that you are:
  • A team player with excellent interpersonal skills -- you'll rely on the cooperation of various individuals in order to achieve your objectives, and this will require the ability to be outgoing and effectively interact with a wide range of personalities, each with their own separate goals, as you both support the group effort and forge ahead with your own initiatives.
  • Independent -- at the same time, you'll need to effectively manage your own time and follow through to get the job done while keeping your Supervisor in the loop.
  • Proactive -- your initiative in controlling situations ahead of time, rather than simply reacting to them, and bringing new and innovative ideas to the table will demonstrate your leadership potential and prepare you for advancement opportunities within the organization.
If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!
